Sri Pushpagiri Mahasamstana Math is one of the Religious institutions being run by the young, dynamic and scholarly Veerashaiva Pontiff Sri Sri Sri Somashekara Shivacharya Mahaswamiji. This Math has a very ancient and long history of over one thousand years. The Math is involved in multi-dimensional activities to serve the people of this region in general and specifically the local poverty-ridden poor people irrespective of caste, creed, gender, culture, or tradition. Thus Math is very well known for its Secularistic approach and service.
The location of the Math is on a very splendid hillock called the Pushpagiri Hills. The history of these hills goes back 900 years to the regime of the then Hoysala Kingdom ruling the Southern Part of Karnataka. This Kingdom was responsible for the prosperous and glorious development of Karnataka.
The Hills is the abode of Lord Mallikarjuna (Lord Shiva) and is the reigning deity of Pushpagiri. The temple was built by Queen Shanthala Devi, a renowned danseuse and the Queen of King Vishnuvarrdhana during the 11th Century. The Math has seen several pontiffs and it has a large group of followers around the globe. It has 4 branches in Hassan District which are serving society for the past 600 years.
The present seer of the math Sri Sri Sri Siomashekhara Mahaswamiji is very young, dynamic and much interested in establishing and carrying out multifaceted activities in the math. In this regard, he is embarking on a very big project of Establishing a Local Museum for the benefit of society at large.
This dream project of him consists of the following 6 themes :
To encourage and promote a healthy atmosphere among all religions and create a healthy constructive national attitude to the moral, mental and physical upliftment of all sects.
To diffuse the gospel of “BASAVA-KAYAKAVE KAILASA” as far as they are applicable in all walks of life for the betterment and guidance of humanity.
